Linux Kernel posters are coming soon!

The time has finally come to submit the first order of kernel posters!

To get an idea of what the posters look like, check out some examples in the OSLUG gallery or look at the one hanging in the Penguin's Nest (Dearborn 401). Posters will be available in two sizes: 3x4ft and 6x8ft (4 3x4 pieces that the buyer is responsible for piecing together). Please note that the small text identifying file names and functions is not readable in the 3x4ft version, but is sometimes readable in the 6x8ft version.

Prices are not set in stone and may change slightly, but currently the plan is:
3x4: $20.00
6x8: $58.00

The profits go to the Oregon State Linux Users Group to help with future events. Once the posters have been printed they will be be available from me (Michael Marineau) during the Hacking Socials and the next Installfest if they are done in time. If you are interested in buying a poster, please send an email with your name, the size, and number of posters you want to kernelposters at lug.oregonstate.edu. If you cannot come and pick up your posters in person (i.e. if you don't live near Corvallis) please note that in the email so we can make the necessary arrangements.

A bit of background on the posters themselves:

The code that generates the posters was originally developed by Rusty Russell in the early days of the 2.4 kernel. Maintenance of the code was later taken over by Christian Reiniger. Then about two summers ago I updated the code to work with the 2.6 kernel. The 2.4.0 kernel posters that were sold for some time though ThinkGeek are the best known, and some of you probably still have one :-D

These new posters are of the 2.6.11.8 kernel (aka Woozy Beaver) which is the kernel that Greg KH released during on of our own OSLUG meetings last year.

Also, a webified version of the poster is available on the lug website. Yes, it is a little outdated at the moment, I should update that to 2.6.15 some time. :-P

Celebrate 100,000,000 Firefox downloads and take back the sky!

What: Launching "Firefox One", an Oregon NASA Space Grant Consortium balloon satellite
Where: Memorial Union Quad
When: Saturday, October 22nd at high-noon. Show up around 11:45 (2 hours before the review-fest)
Why: Last time we took back the sidewalk, this time we are going to 100,000ft
Who: Anyone who wants to celebrate 100,000,000 downloads and help launch the weather balloon

The Oregon State Linux Users Group, Oregon NASA Space Grant Consortium, and the OSU Open Source Lab teamed up to launch "Firefox One", a balloon satellite capable of carrying a 14lb payload to 100,000ft in elevation. Our payload will be a large Firefox banner, CD, and camera to take photos of Firefox at the edge of space.

Tell your classmates, family, and anyone else you can think of to come and help do the launch! The event will be centered at the MU quad, so if you cannot make it physically, you can watch from the MU webcam.

UPDATE:
We've posted a page about how the event went and photos. Cross your fingers that the photos from the baloon gets recovered. :-D
