Knoppix is a wonderful (as they all are) distro of linux that allows you to run a full and complete operation system from CD. This will not write anything to your hard drive, but will allow you to read from your hard drive. Its the perfect way to see what linux looks/feels like and try out playing mp3s or writing a document. Because its CD based, you will lose any data not saved to Disk/USBdrive. Because its CD based, if you try to configure and lose sound (or anything) a simple restart will bring you back to step 1.

When people ask me why to use/have Knoppix, I usually mention:
- Linux, test drive and make an informed decision.
- Has security tools; any computer can become a computer security outpost.
- Can read your drives, helps if you've forgotten your password and need to recover files.
- Doesn't need a hard drive.
- You can test out a newly built computer without a hard drive.
- You can test a newly build without risking your data.
- Free, get that computer working without going out to buy Windows.
