Interested in installing Linux on your box? Are you a beginner, intermediate, or Power user? The Oregon State University Linux User Group will be offering free help installing GNU/Linux on Desktops and Laptops. Join the fun for InstallFest5 this spring term!!!

Event Info:

  • What: InstallFest 5
  • Who: Community members interested in learning and installing Linux.
  • Where: Dearborn 401
  • When: Saturday, May 6th, 1-5pm.
  • Why: This is a great place to bring your laptop or desktop and get help installing Linux or getting that last device working.

Please BACKUP ALL DATA on your drives before bringing them to the install fest; in the rare event of data corruption. Thank you. Note: Please see the OSLUG Disclaimer

Recommended available hard drive space is 5-10 Gb, (10 for long-term use).

Distros:

G-ma (Those that may not be as computer literate as the general public)

User (Those that just want to use the system and not the ins and outs)

Hobbiest/H4X0R (Self Explanatory)

For most people we will be offering Ubuntu, For those who are a little more hesitant about switching to Linux or have concerns about the learning curve we will offer SuSE.

Install Notes

  1. *find out which monitor/screen resolution the display is*
    • write it down for future reference

PartitionMagic

  • only if doing massive moving, defragment the hard drive first
  1. pop in PartitionMagic cd
  2. will probably see one big partion called ´C´
  3. right click on it
  4. select resize/move
  5. spceify free space after or drag bar at top
  6. click <ok>
  7. click <apply>
  8. wait

Ubuntu

  1. pop in disk and start
    • may need to hit F12
    • select cd-rom drive
  2. hit enter to boot cd
  3. select language settings (most likely just hit enter)
  4. try to automatically detect wireless network (if a laptop)
    • if fails, try to automatically detect again
    • if prompted for WEP key, hit enter (we aren´t using one)
    • if fails again, try to manually configure it
    • if all else fails, give up and plug an ethernet cable in :-)
  5. select partition to install on
  6. watch the pretty red bar work its way across the screen
  7. when finishes installing, hit enter (continue)
    • cd will eject
  8. reboot
Post Install
  1. select timezone
  2. type in FULL userś name
    • example: Linus Torvalds
  3. type in user name
    • example: linus
  4. type in new userś password
  5. prompts to download packages from internet
    • select <yes>
  6. watch the text go flying by
  7. select the correct max resolution
    • you wrote this down, right?
  8. press <ok>
  9. log in
