I started running linux in 1998, initially with Redhat 4.3, then 5.2, enough BSD to be impressed with the ports tree, then I ran into Mandrake like a brick wall. (nice intro distro, but I can't stand it now). That led to slackware 7 and then BYO Linux, which was a great learning experience, but not a distro I'd want to use on a daily basis. Eventually I settled on Debian Sid, after oscilating between testing, unstable, and Gentoo.
Currently my environment consists of some lightweight window manager such as sawfish or enlightenment running in xinerama with a dvorak kinesis keyboard and trackball.
